Why you can trust it

Independent score

No brand pays for the score.

Algorithm, not AI

Deterministic: the same food always gets the same score.

Reference methods

Calculation drawing on FEDIAF/AAFCO methods and on European legislation.

Open data

Open Pet Food Facts and its community, ODbL licence.

Made in Spain 🇪🇸

An independent project, in six languages.

As easy as scanning

1

Scan the code

Point at the barcode on the package. Not in our database? Take a photo of the product (brand and name) and another of the ingredients; the AI only reads the label.

2

Get the score

A score from 0 to 100 by colour, with the ingredients to watch explained. A deterministic algorithm calculates it, not an AI.

3

Improve their diet

If there's something better, we show it to you at the end of the analysis. And if you're a member, we tell you how many grams a day they need based on their weight, age and activity.

A score you get at a glance

No complicated tables. Petiqueta tells you what takes points off and what adds them in your pet's diet, and why — in plain language.

Weight, age and activity. We work out the grams a day for your pet, not a generic table off the bag.

Independent score

No brand pays for the score. Neither price nor marketing raises it — only the real composition, with an algorithm, not with money. If we recommend where to buy, we label it as an affiliate link.

Community project

A database we build together

We have +67,500 foods analysed, but not all of them. When you scan a code we don't have yet, we ask you for two photos: the front of the package (brand and name) and the ingredient list, the one that says «composition». You upload them, we analyse them —we're good at it— and in a few seconds you have your score. And that entry stays there for the next person who scans the same food. Like Waze: whoever goes first leaves the road ready for the one behind.

1

Photo of the front

The brand and name of the product.

2

Photo of the ingredients

The list that says «composition».

3

Your score in seconds

And it's saved for everyone else.

Your photos, only to read the label

The images you upload are used to read the brand and ingredients on the package, and are added to a shared catalogue to improve the database. Don't upload photos with personal information.

What about the smart alecs? No problem. We have several checks to catch fake photos and made-up data, so the database stays clean. Thanks for doing your bit and for looking at what your furballs eat.

Total transparency

How we analyse every food

The score is the sum of six criteria with a fixed weight, which are our own, drawing on methods from FEDIAF/AAFCO and on European legislation. A deterministic algorithm calculates it —the same food always gets the same score—, not an AI: the AI only reads the label. And no brand pays for its score.

Protein source

30 pts

The first ingredient should be a named meat or fish (chicken, salmon…), not «by-products» or plant protein. Rewards several animal sources at the top; penalises cereals or plant protein dominating the first places.

Nutritional analysis

20 pts

Protein and fat suited to the species (cats need more than dogs), calculated on a dry matter basis so wet and dry food are compared fairly.

Cereals and carbohydrates

15 pts

Where the cereals sit in the list + estimated carbohydrate percentage. Spots a cereal «split» into several entries to hide it.

Additives and preservatives

15 pts

Penalises BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin, and artificial colourings. Top marks go only to food that declares natural preservatives (tocopherols, rosemary): «nothing bad in it» isn't enough.

Transparency

10 pts

Rewards specific ingredients and declared percentages; penalises vague terms («oils and fats», «derivatives»).

Nutritional standard

10 pts

Whether the label says it's «complete and balanced» under FEDIAF/AAFCO. If it doesn't say so, we don't assume it is. It doesn't apply to snacks, treats and chews: they're complementary foods, which by definition don't cover a full daily ration, so they're scored on the other five criteria and the result is scaled to 100.
